Osteoporosis, which means “porous bones,” usually affects “older women” causing them to become frail and weak. However, osteoporosis is a condition that begins in the younger years of life. Women reach their peak in bone density when they are in their 30s, and unless special attention is given to the amount of calcium and phosphate in their diet, they may be at risk for osteoporosis later in life. It is estimated that 10 million Americans already have osteoporosis and an estimated 18 million have low bone density, which places them at high risk for osteoporosis.


Menopause which is defined as the time when 12 months have passed since your last period, is a biological processed that is characterized by a series of events that can start in your 30’s or 40’s and last into your 50’s and 60’s. Menopause is associated with hormonal, physical, and psychological changes in your life; however, it is not the end of your youth or sexuality.

Symptoms of Concern

The following is a list of symptoms that can be cause for concern. It is important if you have any of these symptoms to notify the doctor. You will know if there is a need to notify the doctor immediately or to wait and call during office hours.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Before a woman reaches menopause, her body produces the hormones estrogen and progesterone. These hormones regulate a woman’s monthly cycle and secondary sex characteristics (such as breast development and function) and prepare the body for fertilization.
