At Partners in Obstetrics & Women’s Health, we use ultrasounds as part of comprehensive gynecological care because they can help us evaluate pelvic anatomy and investigate symptoms with a safe imaging method that does not use radiation. Gynecological ultrasounds give us a closer look at the uterus, ovaries, and surrounding pelvic structures.
Fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus. Some are small and cause no obvious symptoms, while others may contribute to heavy periods, pelvic pressure, bloating, frequent urination, or discomfort. A gynecological ultrasound helps us see the size, number, and location of fibroids so we can better understand how they may be affecting your health.
Ultrasound is not only useful for fibroids. It can also help us evaluate a range of other gynecological concerns involving the pelvic organs. Depending on your symptoms, we may use it to look for:
This type of imaging gives us important information without surgery or more invasive testing in many situations.
We may suggest a gynecological ultrasound if you are experiencing pelvic pain, irregular bleeding, unusually heavy menstrual cycles, or other symptoms that need a closer evaluation. It can also be helpful when we need to monitor a known condition or clarify findings from a physical exam.
Because many gynecological conditions can cause similar symptoms, imaging allows us to move beyond guesswork. Seeing what is happening internally can help us recommend the most appropriate next steps.
A pelvic ultrasound can be performed in one of two ways. An abdominal ultrasound uses a probe on the skin over the lower abdomen. A transvaginal ultrasound uses a slim probe inserted into the vagina for a more detailed view of certain pelvic structures. Our gynecologist will recommend the right approach based on your needs. The exam is generally well tolerated, and the practice notes that ultrasound is painless and uses no radiation.
Preparation matters because it can improve image quality. Partners in Obstetrics & Women’s Health advises patients to drink four 8-ounce glasses of water 1 hour before the appointment and not urinate until the exam is complete. We will also let you know if any other instructions apply to your visit.
